Ethics
Engineering affects the quality of life for every person in the world. In order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of their profession, engineers must be honest, fair, impartial, and dedicated to public health and safety. Engineers are called upon to use their knowledge and abilities in an ever increasing number of traditional and nontraditional forums. To meet this growing challenge, standards of conduct are needed to protect both the engineer and the public.
AAES recognizes the importance of such guidelines for professional conduct. It continues to promote their adoption among our engineering societies and the general scientific and engineering community and within the various levels of government.
Policy Objectives
- Support the adoption of Codes of Ethics by all member societies
- Work toward guidelines, jointly developed by cognizant organizations, for scientists and engineers who serve as volunteers on government boards and panels
- Support the adoption of reasonable standards of ethical conduct for government employees
- Actively support the membership of all engineers in professional and technical societies that have adopted codes of ethics
